How to develop culturally competent oral health care personnel who can provide dental services to diverse populations including limited English proficient patients, through provision of care that addresses issues of quality, access, linguistic barriers and adherence

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify key dimensions of patient-centered care and the important role played by communication in fostering, understanding and developing a therapeutic alliance.
  • Define culture, cultural competence and culturally effective oral healthcare.
  • Recognize that patients and oral healthcare professionals often have different perspectives
  • Recognize the types of issues/challenges that are particularly important in caring for patients of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Dr. Chaviano-Moran, graduated from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She serves in numerous roles, as administrator, faculty, recruiter and mentor, encouraging and supporting prospective and current students, especially those underrepresented in the dental profession. She is currently Associate Dean of Admissions at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

She is the principal investigator for the ADEA GIES Foundation grant, “Creating Awareness in Academic Dentistry”. The goal of this project is to enhance awareness and excitement about careers in academia for dental and dental hygiene students of diverse backgrounds and marginalized groups. She is the Co-PI and dental director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation “Summer Health Professions Educational Program”, SHPEP, and all RSDM educational pipeline programs, promoting dentistry and achievement for ALL students. She is the faculty advisor for the RSDM- Hispanic Student Dental Association and the Dental Association for Equality, a platform for student advocacy in the LGBTQ community.

In 2017, she received the Chair of the ADEA Board Citation for her work on Holistic Admissions. She is a member of the American Dental Education Association, ADEA (currently Secretary-Gay Straight Alliance and former Chair – Student Affairs/Financial Aid/AFASA Section), Consultant Holistic Admissions in Academic Nursing, for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, AACN, National Association of Medical Minority Educators, NAMME and National Association of Advisors to the Health Professional, NAAHP. Before she was elected secretary, Dr. Chaviano-Moran served as a trustee on the board of the Hispanic Dental Association.
